Location and Site

The city of Morelia is located in central Mexico, at the foot of the western Sierra Madre and 1,950 m above the sea level. Built in the 16th century, the historic centre of Morelia is preserved intact and received the inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. Morelia occupies an important place in the history of art and culture in Mexico. The “Conservatorio de Música de las Rosas” of Morelia was the first music conservatory in the Americas, while the “Colegio de San Nicolás de Hidalgo” founded in 1540 was one of the most prestigious schools of colonial Mexico. A number of figures associated with the Mexican history, such as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, José Maria Morelos and Melchor Ocampo were associated with this school.
